Live Long And Prosper

長寿と繁栄を (chōju to han'ei wo)

長寿と繁栄を (chōju to han'ei wo): live long and prosper. 長寿 chōju is long life; 繁栄 han'ei is prosperity, flourishing; と joins them and を marks them as the object of a verb of wishing that is left unsaid, which is how Japanese blesses. The salute and its words first appeared in the Star Trek episode Amok Time in 1967, the gesture Leonard Nimoy's and the line Theodore Sturgeon's, and 長寿と繁栄を is the Japanese encyclopedia's own rendering of the greeting. The pairing was a Japanese wish before it was a Vulcan one: a 1915 guide to natural cures promised its readers health, long life and prosperity in these two nouns, which is why the rendering fits so well; it was already Japanese.
