Like Father, Like Son

此の父にして此の息子有り (kono chichi ni shite kono musuko ari)

此の父にして此の息子有り (kono chichi ni shite kono musuko ari): like father, like son, and in Japanese the likeness is praise. 此の kono is this; 父 chichi is father; にして ni shite is being such, given such a father; 息子 musuko is son; 有り ari is there is: given this father, there is this son. The proverb behind it, この父にしてこの子あり, comes from the 孔叢子, where Confucius's grandson says that with such a father there is such a son, and that is the constant way of things; in Japanese it is first cited from Bakin's 椿説弓張月 of 1807, as an exclamation of admiration. The dictionaries give its sense as praise, a child worthy of a fine parent, a son who is his father's equal. Master Takase brushed the proverb's own form, with 息子, son, in place of the proverb's 子, child, so that the line is for a son.
