此の父にして此の娘有り says that a fine father has a daughter as fine as he is. Said of a daughter and her father, it is praise. The proverb is praise in Bakin's novel of 1807 to 1811, and the Japanese dictionaries call the blame sense, which the English also allows, a misuse. What decides the sense is who says it of whom.

The proverb's 子 is a child of either sex, and Master Takase brushed the line with 娘, daughter, in its place, so that it is a daughter who is her father's equal.
