救命 kyūmei Lifesaving

救命 is lifesaving, the work of saving a life. It is the word on rescue gear: a lifeboat is a 救命ボート (kyūmei bōto), and a life jacket is a 救命胴衣 (kyūmei dōi).

The Japanese word 救命 meaning "Lifesaving" is composed of the kanji 救 (read kyū) meaning "save, help, rescue" and 命 (read mei) meaning "life".
