翡翠 hisui Jade
More about 翡翠
翡翠 is jade, the glossy green stone, and it is also the kingfisher. The stone is named for the bird, its green likened to the kingfisher's back. In the old naming, 翡 was the male bird and 翠 the female. Japan's jade comes from Itoigawa in Niigata, and in 2016 it was named the national stone of Japan.
The Japanese word 翡翠 meaning "Jade" is composed of the kanji 翡 (read hi) meaning "kingfisher" and 翠 (read sui) meaning "green; kingfisher".
