始めに神は天と地を創造された (hajime ni kami wa ten to chi wo sōzō sareta): in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The first sentence of the Bible, in the words of the Japan Bible Society's colloquial translation of 1955, the first Japanese Bible in plain speech; the design writes 始めに in kanji where that Bible prints kana and lets one particle go. された is the honorific passive by which the 1955 Bible says what God does. The classical Bible of 1887 opened with another sentence entirely: 元始に神天地を創造たまへり.
