In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth: the first sentence of the Bible, whole, so the words carry a complete verse and a person who chooses them takes the opening of everything. The words are the Japan Bible Society's colloquial Bible's, with one word, 始めに, written in kanji where that Bible prints kana and one particle let go, so a reader who owns that Bible will find the same sentence there; された is the honorific passive by which that Bible says what God does. The older classical Bible opened with another sentence entirely, so this verse in the voice a Japanese Christian's grandparents heard is a different sentence. The English title is the New International Version's phrase for the verse. Whose beginning it marks is yours.
