英雄 eiyū Hero

英雄 is a hero: a person admired for courage or great deeds. It names a woman or a man alike, so it is also the word for a heroine. It can also mean simply a great person. In Japanese, Beethoven's Third Symphony, the Eroica, is called 英雄.

The Japanese word 英雄 meaning "Hero" is composed of the kanji 英 (read ei) meaning "hero" and 雄 (read yū) meaning "hero; leader; excellence".
