祖父 sofu Grandfather

祖父 is a grandfather, the father of your mother or your father. Grandparents are 祖父母 (sofubo). At home he is じいちゃん (jiichan), and that can be written 祖父ちゃん too.

The Japanese word 祖父 meaning "Grandfather" is composed of the kanji 祖 (read so) meaning "ancestor" and 父 (read fu) meaning "father".
