死神 shinigami God of Death

The Japanese word 死神 meaning "God of Death, Grim Reaper" is composed of the kanji 死 (read shini) meaning "death; die" and 神 (read kami) meaning "god(s)". Together they are read shinigami, because the sounds change where the characters meet: 神 kami becomes gami after 死.

This is another good example of why Japanese is so difficult to learn to read. This is a somewhat unusual reading using the kun-yomi of shini for "death; die".
