God of Death

死神 (shinigami)

The Japanese word 死神 meaning "God of Death, Grim Reaper" is composed of the kanji (read shini) meaning "death; die" and (read gami) meaning "god(s)".

This is another good example of why Japanese is so difficult to learn to read. This is a somewhat unusual reading using the kun-yomi of shini for "death; die". Also notice that the "k" in "kami" gets changed to being pronounced as a "g".
