仏蘭西 furansu France

仏蘭西 is France, written in kanji chosen for their sound: fu, ran, su. The name is usually written in katakana, フランス, and some of these designs are written that way. The first kanji, 仏, stands for France in compounds such as 日仏 (nichifutsu), Japan and France.

The Japanese word 仏蘭西 meaning "France" is composed of the kanji 仏 (read fu) meaning "France; Buddha", 蘭 (read ran) meaning "orchid; Holland", and 西 (read su) meaning "west; Spain".
