Fortune Favors The Brave

勇者は幸運に恵まれる (yūsha wa kōun ni megumareru): the brave are blessed with good fortune. The thought is Roman: Terence wrote fortis fortuna adiuvat in a comedy of 161 BC, Virgil audentis Fortuna iuvat, and Cicero already called it an old proverb a century after Terence. The Japanese here is a modern rendering made for the Latin, plain and grammatical, so a scroll of these words says in Japanese what the English title says. The Meiji dictionaries rendered the line a dozen ways, Fortuna becoming Heaven in some and luck in others; the Japanese proverb tradition's own word on fortune before a charge is 運は天にあり, fortune is Heaven's, and it moves anyway.
