禁じられた愛 kinjirareta ai Forbidden Love

禁じられた kinjirareta is the passive past of 禁じる, to forbid, so the love is forbidden by someone, not merely impossible; 愛 ai is love in every sense the dictionary runs through, family affection, romance, Christian charity, Buddhist craving. The phrase reads at once, and the National Diet Library's full-text search finds it once, inside the longer 禁じられた愛情 in a 1924 psychoanalysis.

Moriyama Ryōko's famous 1969 song is 禁じられた恋, with 恋, the word for romance alone; the design's 愛 is the larger word. The two-character form on this page, 禁愛, writes the same two ideas, forbid and love, in two kanji.
