先づ自己を知れ而して他を知れ (mazu onore wo shire shikashite ta wo shire)
先づ自己を知れ而して他を知れ (mazu onore wo shire shikashite ta wo shire): first know yourself, then know others. The first clause was Japanese before it was karate's: 先づ自己を知れ is how Meiji moral primers rendered Socrates' know thyself. Funakoshi Gichin, the founder of Shōtōkan karate, set the sentence among his twenty precepts. 自己 is read onore here and jiko elsewhere, both readings of the same characters, and the design keeps the list's formal spelling, 先づ with づ, which is how the precepts were written.
