闘士 (toushi)
The Japanese word toushi is composed of the kanji 闘 (read tou) meaning "fight" and 士 (read shi) meaning "gentleman; person". Fighter (toushi) does not have a specific connection to the Samurai (samurai) and Way of the Warrior (bushidou) traditions as does Warrior (musha) for example. And note that toushi, as is true with most Japanese words, is not gender specific and so may be used by both men and women.
