我事に於て後悔せず (ware koto ni oite kōkai sezu)

我事に於て後悔せず (ware koto ni oite kōkai sezu): in what I do, I do not regret. Miyamoto Musashi brushed it in 1645 as the sixth of twenty-one articles on one sheet, the 独行道, the way walked alone, signed and sealed for his pupil Terao Magonojō. Each article is a statement about himself: I do not turn from the way of the generations, I never leave the way of strategy. English passes the line on as a command, Do Not Regret What You Have Done; the Japanese is a swordsman's vow, and that is what hangs on the scroll.
