発見 hakken Discovery

発見 is finding something that no one knew was there. The one who finds it is the 発見者 (hakkensha), and to find it again is 再発見 (saihakken).

The Japanese word 発見 meaning "Discovery" is composed of the kanji 発 (read hatsu) meaning "disclose; emit; publish; discharge" and 見 (read ken) meaning "see; visible; look at; idea; hopes". Together they are read hakken, because the sounds change where the characters meet: 発 hatsu shortens to a doubled k before 見.
