決心 kesshin Determination

決心 is determination, the resolve of someone who has made up their mind. To make a firm resolution is 決心を固める, to make the resolve firm. A close synonym is 決意 (ketsui).

The Japanese word 決心 meaning "Determination" is composed of the kanji 決 (read ketsu) meaning "decide; fix; appoint" and 心 (read shin) meaning "heart; mind; spirit". Together they are read kesshin, because the sounds change where the characters meet: 決 ketsu shortens to a doubled s before 心.
