Fine Japanese Calligraphy

The Art of Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase

褐色 kasshoku Brown

The Japanese word 褐色 meaning "Brown" is composed of the kanji 褐 (read katsu) meaning "brown; woollen kimono" and 色 (read shoku) meaning "color". Together they are read kasshoku, because the sounds change where the characters meet: 褐 katsu shortens to a doubled s before 色.
