The Japanese word 呼吸 meaning "Breath" is composed of the kanji呼 (read ko) meaning "call; call out to; invite" and 吸 (read kyū) meaning "suck; imbibe; inhale".
One sometimes sees the archaic reading in Martial Arts as ikibuki though this is not used in everyday Japanese. This design is a reminder of the importance of proper breathing.

About the Designs
Each design is Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase's hand-brushed calligraphy of the word or phrase on this page, delivered as a PDF you can print. Every PDF includes the line art, so a tattoo artist or a craftsperson can work from the outline as well as the brushed image.
