Believe in Oneself

自分を信じる (jibun wo shinjiru): believe in yourself. 自分 jibun is the reflexive, oneself, so the sentence is true for whoever reads it; を marks it as the object; 信じる shinjiru is to believe, in the one-step form the dictionary first cites from 1902. The first Japanese to say it in print was a jilted man on a beach: in Ozaki Kōyō's 金色夜叉, in the 1903 edition, Kan'ichi tells Miya at Atami that he had believed in her as much as he believed in himself. English and Japanese share the verb and the object here; the line adds nothing and loses nothing in either direction.
