友よ水になれ (tomo yo mizu ni nare)

友よ水になれ (tomo yo mizu ni nare): be water, my friend. 友よ tomo yo is the vocative, friend, put first where English puts my friend last; 水 mizu is water; になれ ni nare is the imperative of なる naru, become: become water. The line is Bruce Lee's own, written for his part in the television series Longstreet in 1971 and recited by him in the footage a 2000 documentary made famous, from empty your mind to be water, my friend. It has no Japanese rendering in print; this one is the house's, short and in the order Japanese likes, the person addressed first and the verb at the end.

Be formless, Shapeless, like water.
If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup.
You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle.
You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot.
