償い tsugunai Atonement

償い is what a person gives or does to make up for a loss or a wrong. It comes from the verb 償う (tsugunau), to make up for or to atone for. The other word on this page, 贖罪, is atonement for a sin.

贖罪 is atonement for a sin. It can also be a verb, to atone. In Christian writing it is the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is 贖罪の日 (shokuzai no hi).

The Japanese word 贖罪 meaning "Atonement" is composed of the kanji 贖 (read shoku) meaning "redeem" and 罪 (read zai) meaning "guilt; sin; crime".
