女優 joyū Actress

女優 is an actress, a woman who acts on stage or screen. An actor of either sex is 俳優 (haiyū), and a male actor is 男優 (dan'yū).

The Japanese word 女優 meaning "Actress" is composed of the kanji 女 (read jo) meaning "woman; female" and 優 (read yū) meaning "actor; tenderness; excellence".
