千里の道も一歩より (senri no michi mo ippo yori)

千里の道も一歩より (senri no michi mo ippo yori): even a road of a thousand ri begins from one step. The English everyone knows, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, is the same thought. The line in the Laozi, chapter sixty-four, has a journey and the ground beneath the feet; the Japanese proverb, in print since 1755, gives it the road and the step, and English took the step from Legge in 1891. A ri is not a mile, and miles is the one liberty every English reader takes. The scroll keeps より, the proverb's older particle; today's speakers say から.
