Seiryoku Zen'yo and Jita Kyoei, the Two Foundational Maxims of Judo
The two maxims Kano Jigoro set at the foundation of Judo, hand-brushed by Master Calligrapher Eri Takase and mounted as a matched pair of traditional hanging scrolls. 精力善用 (seiryoku zen'yo) is "maximum efficiency, minimum effort," built from 精力 (seiryoku), energy, and 善用 (zen'you), good use. 自他共栄 (jita kyoei) is "mutual welfare and prosperity," built from 自他 (jita), oneself and others, and 共栄 (kyouei), mutual prosperity. Kano taught them together. They are two halves of one idea: train your energy well, and let the result serve everyone. Each scroll carries Eri's signature, 英利, and her red seal, and each is mounted on traditional brocade with a wooden roller. Offered here as a pair, to hang together as they were meant to be read.
