This Scroll by Master Japanese Calligrapher Eri Takase shows the Enso (the Zen circle) along with the famous quote by Eno honrai muichimotsu which is variously translated as By Nature, Having Nothing or There having been nothing since the beginning. The idea being that one should start out empty of ideas or that there is nothing to cling to (ideas/possession) since all things are empty. For more information on the saying see: By Nature Having Nothing Master Takase's seal and signature is on the lower left of the scroll. And on the lower left of the presentation kiri box. The box reads ichi enso zu - or Enso Circle. The scroll measures 12 3/4" W x 43" H. |
